05, Pausing For Thought

About this Work
Cats do this. Foxes do this. Certain dogs. A full stop in the middle of movement, the head turned, weight distributed as if permanently provisional, something in the middle distance requiring assessment. Pausing for Thought catches a creature mid-deliberation, present and absent at once.
Burnt orange and raw sienna fill the ground, warm and immediate. Against it the animal assembles in cooler fragments: blue-grey collage, burgundy and graphite marks, a white negative space where the haunches lift. The posture is alert, the rendering almost casual. A painting about the intelligence of animals, that particular, unself-conscious kind of thinking that happens in the body.
