02, Sweetly Calling

About this Work
There is a moment, usually at dusk, when a bird’s call reaches you before the bird does. The mind fills in the rest, a shape in the branches, the particular tilt of a wing, the held stillness before the next note. Sweetly Calling began there: in that gap between the glimpse and the knowing.
The bird builds itself from the inside out. Collaged fragments of colour and mark, olive green, pale lilac, a flash of acid yellow at the feet, find their way into something unmistakably alive. The ground is soft blue-grey, the light neither morning nor evening but something held between. One foot forward, body curved mid-song.
A painting about the small, particular joy of a garden bird doing exactly what it does.
